Winter Newsletter

Welcome to the 4th newsletter of 2009.

Editors comment (or Syd's Ramblings)

This year has flown - I must be getting older.

I'll keep this newsletter short, as I know this is a very busy time of year.

On with the newsletter.

A Quarter of - The old fashioned sweetshop on the internet. is the coolest place on the web to buy those long lost, retro sweets of the past. Remember Flying Saucers, Kola Kubes, Palma Violets and Gobstoppers? Thought they had disappeared? Not so. Online sweetshop allows old school sweet fanatics to get their teeth into a huge selection of nostalgic treats - including Cherry Lips, sherbet Double Dips and Acid Drops.

A Quarter Of began life as a simple conversation in a local pub - reminiscing about the great childhood sweets and lamenting the sad disappearance of the Space Dust, Black Jacks and Sugar Mice. Right then, a challenge was set to find those lost, but not forgotten, sweets of the 1970s and 1980s - to recreate 'The Chocolate Box', the small, crammed sweetshop that Michael used to frequent with his pocket money, wide eyes and sticky fingers as a child.

The idea of opening his own sweet shop had been growing in Michael's mind. Knowing how much fun reminiscing about the good old days could be, he wanted to capture that elusive 'retro vibe', while offering 21st century (online) access to the wealth of sweets from two decades ago.

Michael wanted his online store to be quirky and have a strong 'personality', reflecting the atmosphere of 70s and 80s childhoods. A Quarter Of aims to be a fun site which encourages interactions with its customers via its "Suggest a Sweet" link (which has led to the addition of many of the customers favourite sweets), the "Whatever Happened To" forum where visitors can share memories of sweets, old television confectionery commercials and daydream of the good old days.

Michael wanted the website A Quarter Of to be the online version of an old fashioned sweet shop, a lot like the one he grew up with 'The Chocolate Box'. He decided that the site would bring fun and enjoyment as well as a large measure of nostalgia and so he thought back to what he would be reading while eating a bag of space dust - Whizzer and Chips! And with the artistic help of Colin Whittock an original Whizzer and Chips cartoonist, opened its (virtual) doors to the public in 2002. The quirkiness of the online sweetshop, old fashioned service and authentic products are what makes A Quarter Of truly unique.

A Quarter Of sells over 700 varieties of sweets including traditional favourites like Wham Bars, Anglo Bubbly, Black Jacks, Chelsea Whoppers, Fizzy Cola Bottles and Flying Saucers. The website instantly transports you back to your childhood with its treasure trove of sweet delights, reminiscences from memory lane and good, old-fashioned service.
