Company Profile

Read Foundry - Brierley Hill, West Midlands.

John Read

Read Foundry was started in 1969 by my father Bob Read. Initially, the foundry made cast iron and bronze castings for the engineering sector. Castings produced included; bronze bearings for the cement works and for power presses. Cast iron castings for lifting gear and parts for heating boilers used in the coalmines.

As time went by, we became involved in the railway and automotive sectors which required the addition of an aluminium casting facility. Castings now included armature fans, bronze brush boxes, manifolds, bell housings, sumps and even office furniture.

Today we are still making these bronze, cast iron and aluminium castings and because we can specialise in 'one off ' and small batch runs we also cast such diverse individual items as vintage car and motorcycle components to model steam train parts and tooling for bottling and labelling machines.

Around 1996 we incorporated Jabez Attwood who have designed and manufactured greenhouse boilers for over 100 years. We still manufacture and supply these boilers to the greenhouse user. We have also developed a range of castings for the home and garden markets. These include painted and finished cast bronze house nameplates and numbers, boot scrapers, wall brackets, wind-bells, hose protectors and a range of sundials including: Draco sundials, wall sundials, birdbaths with sundial and table sundials. These products are sold under our Brierley Heritage mark.

We are also involved in local artist projects and have made a number of projects in bronze, including decorating a local shopping centre with bronze blockpavers, these were designed in clay by local school children. We then used their clay models as patterns to produce the pavers in bronze, which we antiqued and waxed so that they would remain untarnished for years.
